Things to do in London this Christmas
It’s December, aka one of my favourite months of the year. You best believe I’ll be pumping out the Christmas songs from now until Christmas. Who doesn’t love being cosy next to a lit up tree with a hot chocolate and watching the best of the seasons TV.
This is the first year we have the tree before mid December and I’m loving it already, except for the fact my brother has made a 3D Patrick Star from Spongebob for the top of the tree, it honestly looks like a 4 year old has made it, and he’s 21. Anyway, not the point. Today as you might have guessed, I am going to tell you about a few of the best places to visit for Christmas in London.
I thought I’d start with the obvious choice and start with Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. If you aren’t living under a rock (like Patrick Star) then you’ll already know all about this place.
Last year, it had over 3 million visitors in the 6 weeks it was open. It’s got everything you could desire. Shopping stands for the mums, kids shows for all the little ones, ice skating and a big wheel for the teens and the Bavarian Village for all the young adults. It also has lots of food stands, including all different foods, from German dishes like a Bratwurst, as well as all the sweet treats you could wish for. A lot of the activities are pre-bookable, so you can book online before you visit.
It’s open from now until 6th January 2019 from 10am-10pm. My best tips would be avoid going on Friday or the weekend if possible as this is when it is likely to be rammed. For the best experience I’d go from 4pm onwards and go on a weekday so you can walk around without the annoyance of bumping into people. They have many amazing lights and attractions which make for great photos, and I would recommend booking the Big Wheel to get a great view of the whole event.
Make sure you wrap up warm, especially if you are going to visit the Ice Bar or Ice Skating as all the events are partially outside, even some of the shows are not completely inside.
The next attraction I would recommend would be Christmas at Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens is London’s largest world heritage site and most commonly known as a botanical garden located in South West London, about 30 minutes from Waterloo. With over a million yearly visitors, it’s no surprise this is a highly popular event. You have to pre-book for the event, with only a few tickets remaining for the rest of the season.
The Light Show is a mile long display with tunnels and hanging lights and more for photo opportunities the whole way through, and contains over a million lights altogether. It all comes to an end at the front of the Kew Gardens main building for a laser beam display. It is the perfect experience to enjoy before Christmas, and fun for all the family.
The event is running most nights and weekends in London until 1st January 2019 from 5pm-10pm. Tickets are available here.
The next attraction has become a family tradition of ours, which is Ice Skating. Our family each year get up on Christmas Eve and head to Somerset House for our annual ice skating. Somerset House however is not the only space in London to ice skate, there are many open for the Christmas period for all areas of London.
Some of my other favourites include The Tower of London, Natural History Museum and Canary Wharf. There are also some others including Hampton Court Palace and Winterville in Clapham, and Alexandra Palace which I am yet to try. Overall ice skating is a great activity and is a nice way to spend time with your loved ones and get you in the Christmas spirit while you skate around listening to Christmas music.
The last activity to do when in London for Christmas is of course, going to see the London Christmas lights. They have got to be some of the best in the world, and are all over Central London, and free to visit. Most years my family and I will head out into Central and walk around looking at them all, from Shakespeare’s Globe, to Covent Garden, to Oxford Street. I enjoy the Carnaby Street lights, just off from Oxford Street each year so can’t wait to make my way down to see them and admire them all.
So that’s it, I haven’t covered everything, there are plenty more options worth a mention, including, Hogwarts in the Snow, Christmas at Kensington Palace, Enchanted Woodland at Syon Park, and Christmas Floating Film Festival by St. Katharine’s Dock.
